This Is The World's First 'True' Flying Car To Get Approval To Fly
Last year, we introduced you to the Alef Model A, an upcoming electric car with the ability to take off vertically and fly from any road.
Now, the firm behind the Model A, Alef Aeronautics, has revealed that it has received the experimental category special airworthiness certificate from the US Federal Aviation Agency. The company claims that it is the first time a vehicle of this nature has received approval from the US government.
However, it is important to note that the certificate has been awarded to the Armada Model Zero, the precursor to the Model A that Alef hopes to deliver to customers sometime in 2025.
The certificate will allow Alef Aeronautics to fly the Armada Model Zero for limited, experimental purposes, such as the research and development required to test the flying car. This certificate will also allow Alef Aeronautics to fly the electric car for exhibition purposes.
The Alef Model A was revealed at an event in October last year. At its launch, the firm had described it as an electric car that you mostly drive on the road. The firm claims that the flight mode with the VTOL system was to mainly jump out of situations like traffic jams.
The Alef Model A's claimed range on the ground is a claimed 322km (200 miles), while its flight range is lower at 177km (110 miles) on a single charge of the battery pack. The Model A has a claimed top speed of just 56km/h (35mi/h)
Alef didn't reveal the capacity of the battery pack powering the Model A or the power output of the hub-mounted electric motors that power the eight propellers mounted in the mostly mesh-covered body of the Model A, which is priced at $300,000 (Rs 2.46 crore).
The real party trick other than eVTOL tech is the gimbaled cabin. After lifting into the air, the body of the Model A rotates so that the sides become the wings of the flying car.
The seats in the cabin move into position so that the driver now what the roof is when the flying car is on the ground. Once everything is in place, forward flight can commence.
Thoughts About Alef's FAA Approval
The fact that Alef Aeronautics has managed to get FAA approval for its flying electric car gives us hope that we could see a proper flying car in the very near future.
