Avani Chaturvedi, IAF Flying Officer, Becomes The First Indian Sister To Fly A Fighter Jet Alone
MIG-21 is a Russian-made fighter jet, made in the 1950s.
Avani Chaturvedi, Indian Air Force Flying Officer flew a MiG-21 aircraft, to the title of 'The First Indian Woman To Fly A Fighter Jet All By Herself'. The Madhya Pradesh native, Avani Chaturvedi, flew the fighter jet from Jamnagar Air Base in Gujarat on February 19, 2018.
Avani Chaturvedi had enough previous experience in flying aircrafts. But she was always accompanied by a trainer while doing so. A fighter jet, unlike regular aircrafts, flies at incredible speeds and it takes a lot of practice and cautiousness to excel in flying it.

The first Indian lady pilot to fly a fighter jet all alone, flew the supersonic MiG-21 Bison for about 30 minutes. MiG-21 is a Russian-made fighter jet and is the oldest Indian Air Force military plane still in operation.

About MiG-21

MiG-21 is a Russian-made supersonic (faster than sound) fighter jet. ‘MiG' stands for ‘Mikoyan Gurevich' which are the last names of its founders, Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich.

MiG-21 fighter jets were designed and developed by the Soviet Union in the 1950s. The first MiG-21 flew with all its glory in 1956. And in 1959, MiGs were commissioned for military duty. MiG-21 has also got the title of being one of the most prominent fighter jets used all over the world.

MiG-21 fighter jets are still being used in over 60 countries including India. 49 countries have decommissioned the legendary aircraft for something more advanced. India bought its first MiG aircraft from Russia, in 1961. In the same year, India also acquired the license to manufacture the jet.

Indian Air Force had its first MiG commissioned in the ‘70s. MiG-21 fighter jets can fly at speeds around 2200km/h. India has almost 300 MiGs in service today.
Thoughts On The First Lady Fighter Jet Pilot In Indian Air Force

While almost all fields of work in India offer adequate levels of gender equality, it doesn't always happen in the military. Indian Air Force, a home for brave souls and risk-takers, had always been a place of male dominance. But Avani has made an impact by flying the MiG-21 Bison all by herself. We hope that more such brave Indian women step forward to make a difference.
