BEML's Groundbreaking Move: Prototype Manufacturing Of Bangalore's Driverless Metros Commence
BEML Ltd., a prominent manufacturer of rail and Metro trainsets in India, has commenced the prototype manufacturing of driverless Metro trainsets for the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation's (BMRCL) Lines two and six, including the Bengaluru Airport Line. This project, known as the 5RS-DM Project, marks a significant step forward in urban transportation.
In August, BEML secured an order for 53 trainsets valued at Rs 3,177 crore. The project involves designing, manufacturing, supplying, installing, testing, and commissioning these trainsets. Additionally, BEML will provide comprehensive maintenance services for up to 15 years under the Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2, 2A, and 2B.

The trainsets will feature a six-car formation entirely designed and developed by BEML's engineering teams in Bengaluru. Constructed using high-tensile austenitic stainless steel, these trainsets ensure durability and safety while enhancing passenger comfort. Each Metro car will be equipped with two roof-mounted Saloon Air Conditioners to maintain effective air-conditioning.
Passenger Comfort and Safety
To enhance passenger experience, the trains will include an IP-based Passenger Announcement (PA) and Passenger Information System (PIS). This system will provide real-time station information through an LCD-based Dynamic Route Map display. Additionally, a Passenger Saloon Surveillance System (PSSS) will be installed to ensure security within the train cars.
For added safety, the trains will feature electrically driven automatic doors synchronised with Platform Screen Doors. This integration aims to prevent accidents during boarding and alighting. The use of advanced technology in these systems underscores BEML's commitment to passenger safety.
The comprehensive nature of this project highlights BEML's capability in handling large-scale urban transportation projects. The company's focus on in-house design and development ensures that the trainsets meet high standards of quality and reliability. This initiative is expected to significantly improve public transportation in Bengaluru.
The new driverless Metro trainsets are part of a broader effort to modernise urban transit systems in India. By incorporating advanced materials and technologies, BEML aims to set new benchmarks in the industry. The successful implementation of this project could pave the way for similar initiatives across other Indian cities.
This development comes at a time when urban centres are increasingly looking towards sustainable and efficient public transport solutions. The introduction of driverless technology is seen as a crucial step towards achieving these goals. It also reflects India's growing expertise in developing sophisticated transportation infrastructure.
The project's scope includes not only the physical construction of the trainsets but also their long-term maintenance. This holistic approach ensures that the trains remain operationally efficient throughout their service life. BEML's role extends beyond manufacturing to include ongoing support and upkeep.
By focusing on both innovation and practicality, BEML is poised to make a significant impact on India's metro rail landscape. The company's efforts align with broader national objectives of enhancing urban mobility through state-of-the-art public transport systems.
This initiative is expected to bring about substantial improvements in commuter experience by reducing travel times and increasing reliability. As cities continue to expand, such advancements are crucial for maintaining efficient urban mobility networks.
Overall, BEML's involvement in this project underscores its position as a key player in India's transportation sector. The successful rollout of these driverless Metro trainsets will likely serve as a model for future projects aimed at modernising public transit systems across the country.
