Bengaluru Becomes India's First City To Get Live Traffic Signal Countdown On Mappls App

Bengaluru has become the first city in India to feature live traffic signal countdowns within the Mappls navigation app. The new functionality is a result of collaboration between MapmyIndia, the Bengaluru Traffic Police, and Arcadis India.

The feature brings real-time traffic signal timings directly to the Mapls app on smartphone screens. As drivers approach a junction, the Mappls app mirrors the actual signal timer, displaying the same countdown above the moving vehicle icon in the Mappls interface.

Bengaluru Gets Live Traffic Signal Countdown On Mappls

MapmyIndia CEO Rohan Verma said the feature allows drivers to see how many seconds remain before the light changes, describing the experience as "magical and helpful" in a post demonstrating the same on X. The update aims to make navigation in Bengaluru more predictable and data-driven.

Currently, 169 traffic signals across Bengaluru have been integrated with the system. These are AI-powered vehicle-actuated control (VAC) junctions equipped with sensors and automated timing adjustments based on the traffic volume detected on each road segment.
When the signals run in automatic mode, the Mappls app displays the countdown. If the signals are operated manually or disconnected from the automated network, the timer remains inactive. The companies involved said more junctions will be added as the system scales.
The Mappls app's integration uses live data from the city's smart traffic infrastructure, allowing users to anticipate the time left at red lights while driving. The feature updates dynamically to reflect the exact countdown running on the physical signal.
Verma shared a demonstration of the feature on X, showing how the countdown appears in real time during a drive through Bengaluru. His post received more than 4.23 lakh views within days, drawing strong engagement from city commuters and Mappls users.
He noted that drivers could even view the countdown while they are several hundred metres away from a junction, giving them a better sense of timing while approaching signals during daily commutes.
The feature is part of a broader Mappls upgrade that focuses on real-time navigation data. The app already offers tools like live congestion indicators, road safety alerts, and dynamic routing based on traffic flow conditions across major cities.
With Bengaluru's inclusion, Mappls becomes the first navigation app in the country to show live signal timers directly on digital maps. The rollout marks another step in the integration of smart traffic data with everyday driving technology in Indian cities.
