Are Your Kids Safe? Bengaluru Schools Implement Crucial Transport Safety Checks

In a significant move to strengthen the safety of schoolchildren in Bengaluru, the Department of School Education has introduced a new mandate for private schools. This directive necessitates that all private school van and bus drivers, along with their helpers, must undergo police verification and obtain a certificate affirming their credibility. These documents must be uploaded to the Students Achievement Tracking System (SATS) portal as a measure of compliance.

Enhanced Safety Measures

The decision to enforce this regulation arrives amid a growing concern over the rise in child abuse incidents linked to school transport services. With the welfare of students being the utmost priority, the department has mandated that these verification certificates be renewed biennially to maintain an up-to-date account of the individuals responsible for transporting schoolchildren.

In an effort to further safeguard students, the department has also stipulated that only female helpers may be employed on school vehicles. The drivers and helpers are now required to sign in at the school register twice daily; once upon the morning arrival and again after returning to the school post the children's drop-off at their homes.

Ongoing Compliance and Surveillance

It falls under the jurisdiction of Block Education Officers to ensure that schools adhere to these safety guidelines. Additional safety measures have been prescribed, including the installation of CCTV cameras on school vehicles and adherence to the stipulated children-to-vehicle ratio as per the amended Karnataka Motor Vehicle Act of 1989.

The private school sector has largely received these measures with open arms, acknowledging the need for enhanced security protocols. However, they have also appealed to the state government to alleviate the financial burden associated with regular certification.

D Shashi Kumar, the general secretary of the Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka, has suggested that the government provide these verification services free of charge to aid educational institutions, especially considering the high turnover rates of staff in private schools.
