Innovative Garbage Collection Machine Launched Under Coimbatore's Smart City Initiative
Coimbatore's Periyakulam area has introduced a modern machine for garbage collection as part of the Smart City project. This initiative aims to enhance urban infrastructure using advanced technology.
A video showcasing this machine's operation has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread interest. Many are sharing the footage, prompting discussions about the device's effectiveness.

The Smart City project is being rolled out across India, with government funds allocated to expedite these developments. In Periyakulam, located in Coimbatore's Ukkadam area, smart city initiatives are actively underway.
A private company managing water bodies in this region employs a modern vehicle for garbage collection. This vehicle uses vacuum technology to gather plastic papers, bottles, and other litter scattered around.
Manufactured by Gobler, this vehicle is part of the Smart City project and is operated by a private firm. The video of its operation has been widely shared on social media platforms.
The vehicle features a standing space for the driver and a handle for operation. It includes a vacuum cleaning pump that the driver can use while standing in the vehicle.
Garbage bins are installed at the rear of the vehicle to collect waste sucked through the vacuum pump. Designed with modern technology, it has three wheels—one at the front and two at the back.
Battery-Powered Efficiency
This battery-powered device has two main motors: a 1.5 kW vacuum cleaning motor running at about 3000 RPM and a 1 kW motor for vehicle movement. The battery operates at 100 to 145 Ampere hours, allowing the vehicle to run for 10 to 12 hours.
The vehicle collects both dry and wet garbage from roads. It was first tested in May, and five units were purchased for Rs. 16 lakhs if successful.
Public Reception and Criticism
This device is currently in use in Ukkadam Periyakulam, with plans to expand throughout Coimbatore gradually. While videos of its operation are popular on social media, there have been criticisms as well.
Critics argue that the device takes more time and effort than manual collection. In one video, an operator picks up garbage from areas inaccessible to the vehicle, suggesting that manual collection might be more efficient.
Some believe that allocating personnel for manual garbage collection could be more cost-effective than using this modern machine. They compare it to other devices like mosquito-killing machines, questioning its necessity.
The introduction of this modern garbage collection vehicle marks a significant step in Coimbatore's Smart City project. While it has garnered attention and sparked debate, its long-term impact remains to be seen as it continues to be evaluated and potentially expanded across the city.
