Delhi Revolutionizes Public Transport: Adds 350 New Electric Buses
In a significant step towards bolstering its public transport fleet with sustainable options, Delhi has welcomed 350 new electric buses. This latest addition, flagged off on February 14, 2024, by Lt Governor VK Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, elevates the national capital's tally to 1,650 electric buses.
This achievement not only positions Delhi as the leading city in India in terms of the number of electric buses but also ranks it third globally. The flag-off ceremony at Sarai Kale Khan bus stand marked the integration of these 350 electric buses into Delhi's existing fleet.
Manufactured by JBM, these buses are low-floor models boasting a range of 250 kilometres on a single charge. To buses are also equipped with GPS, CCTV cameras, and panic buttons. While 300 of these buses will reinforce the cluster bus fleet, the remainder will serve under the Delhi Transport Corporation.
These electric buses were procured under the Centre's FAME-II scheme, highlighting the collaborative efforts towards promoting eco-friendly transport solutions. The Chief Minister highlighted the pivotal role of electric buses in Delhi's vision for zero-emission public transport.
Delhi's Evolving Public Transport Landscape
Since 2022, Delhi has made remarkable strides by adding 1,300 electric buses to its fleet. According to the transport ministry, these buses have collectively covered 5.8 crore kilometres, aiding in the reduction of approximately 47,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
Presently, electric buses constitute over 10 per cent of Delhi's extensive public bus fleet, which includes 7,582 vehicles. The strategic plan is to have electric buses represent 80 per cent of the city's public transport fleet in the near future.
