Elytron VTOL Air Taxi Concept Is A combination Of Aeroplane And Helicopter
California-based Elytron is developing a five-seater air taxi which can take off and land like a helicopter. The aircraft can reach speeds of a fixed wing aeroplane.
Elytron revealed the two-seater concept aircraft at the 2014 EAA. Now the California-based aviation firm has bigger plans based on the same project.
Elytron is developing a five-seater aircraft which combine the features of aeroplane and helicopter. The aircraft can take off and land vertically (VTOL) as a helicopter.

The VTOL aircraft can take off and land vertically and has the capability to fly at the speed of a fixed wing aeroplane. The aircraft can also take off and land in a conventional method.

Elytron Aircraft has partnered with NASA to test the prototype. A company spokesman stated that something big would be announced in the coming months.

The 5S aircraft model is currently under development. The prototype model can carry up to four passengers excluding the pilot. The air taxi has a capability to hit a speed of 480km/h. The company stated that the top speed of the aircraft is 629km/h.

The Elytron Aircraft features three combined wings. A pair of ‘proprotors' or rotary wings and two pairs of fixed wings. The fixed wings are split into forwarding pair and aft pair joined by winglets.

The air taxi makes use of a joined wing concept design. The main wings of the aircraft have a high aspect ratio and are very light which reduces the drag. The risk of rotor strikes is minimal as the wings are joined by winglets.
