Reindeers Antlers In Finland To Get Reflective Paint To Warn Motorists
Finland has some serious problem with caribou or reindeers. You see, these animals are plentiful in the country and are even domesticated like cows and sheep.
The country being very close to the Arctic circle has very short days and in the darkness motorists and reindeers frequently collide, which prove fatal not only to the the deers but also to people.
So, as a possible solution to this problem the Finnish Reindeer Herders' Association has come up with a unique plan. To paint the reindeers' antlers with glow-in-the-dark reflective paint.
"The goal is specifically to prevent road accidents. The spray is being tried on their fur, but it is maybe more effective on their antlers because the reflection can be seen in every direction," Reindeer Herders' Association Executive Director Anne Ollila said, according to Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yle.
The paint used on the fur is water soluble while the sort used on the antlers is a more permanent kind.
Spraying reindeer antlers with a reflective paint indeed sounds like a novel idea to warn motorists about the animals on the road and to save these animals. But how they plan to paint the antlers of thousands of these large animals is yet to be seen. And then there are young reindeers and a few populations of female ones which lack antlers.
The first trial will begin next fall at the reindeer roundup in Lapland, the most northern region in Finland, which is also the region with the longest nights.
