India Enhances Traffic Law Enforcement With AI Surveillance Cameras
Traffic violations are a major cause of accidents and fatalities. They also contribute to severe traffic congestion. As a result, police across India are taking strict measures against traffic offenders. This is evident in all states, where enforcement of traffic laws is a priority.
However, it is impractical for police to monitor every road and street in person. Roadside traffic surveillance cameras have become essential tools for catching violators. These cameras are strategically placed on key roads to help police identify and penalise offenders.

In recent developments, some young drivers have found ways to evade these surveillance cameras. They use a mobile app that shows the locations of these cameras. By knowing where the cameras are, they avoid breaking traffic rules only in those areas, thus escaping fines and FIRs.
On the Mysore-Bengaluru highway, AI-enabled cameras are used to detect speeding vehicles and issue fines. These cameras can identify vehicles travelling at speeds of 80 km per hour or more. They can easily capture the number plates of speeding vehicles, helping police enforce speed limits.
Despite these measures, some drivers use the app to slow down before reaching the cameras and then speed up after passing them. This tactic allows them to avoid detection and fines. This behaviour has been particularly noted on National Highway 275.
The police are aware of this evasion tactic and plan to implement new strategies to catch speeding vehicles on this highway. Over 60 AI cameras were installed on this highway in March 2023. These cameras identify various violations, including speeding and sudden lane changes, leading to fines for offenders.
Despite these efforts, some drivers continue to use the app to cheat the system. The police have been issuing fines and FIRs against those who exceed speeds of 130km/hr. However, many drivers are now avoiding penalties by using this technology.
This situation has caused frustration among the police. High-speed driving leads to frequent accidents, prompting the installation of advanced cameras at significant expense. The police express disappointment that some individuals use technology to bypass these safety measures.
Traffic rules have been tightened to prevent accidents and save lives. Yet, some people exploit advanced technology to evade penalties without realising the potential dangers they face in the future.
