An underground conduit of 270 km for the bullet train route is complete, with the accompanying electrical work to power these futuristic machines also accomplished along the same distance. Daring infrastructure, including a subsea line connecting Mumbai to Thane, marks the sheer boldness of the project. As initial works commence, a concurrent endeavour bridges eight rivers, with two crossings already standing completed. Proclaimed as nearly finished is the Sabarmati railway station, set to serve as a prime bullet train hub.
Financial Blueprint and Developmental Strides
Funding for this prestigious project scales to Rs 1.50 lakh crore, with Rs 10,000 crore borrowed from the central government, and an equal divide of the residual Rs 5,000 crore supported by Maharashtra and Gujarat state government contributions, facilitated by the Japan International Corporation Agency with a modest interest rate of 0.1 per cent annually.
Initiated with a foundation stone in September 2017, the project promises to reduce the Mumbai to Ahmedabad journey to a mere two hours, covering approximately 500 km. The Japanese company, SIMCARDUSION TECHNOLOGY, is at the helm of the construction phase.
Originally set for a 2022 completion, the venture faced hurdles, notably in land acquisition, requiring an adjustment in timelines. Despite the setbacks and being in the preliminary stages, expectations are set for a 2026 launch, lifting India onto the dais of nations boasting high-speed rail connectivity.
