John Hertz, born in Slovakia, immigrated to USA as a child and in 1915, at the age of 36, founded the Yellow Cab Company in Chicago.

In 1923, Hertz bought a rental-car company and renamed it Hertz Drive-Ur-Self Corporation.

In 1926, the company was acquired by General Motors (GM) and John became a GM board member.

The first Hertz car rental shop is opened in Chicago's Midway Airport in 1932.

First international service started in France in 1950

In 2002, becomes the first car rental company to start business in China.

Launches "Green Collection" in 2006, with the collection consisting of Toyota Prius, Ford Fusion,Buick LaCrosse, Toyota Camry, and Hyundai Sonata. Hertz also provides Nissan Leaf electric cars.

Dedicated reservation and customer service centers receive an estimated 40 million phone calls. 30 million reservations are made every year.
