Mangaluru Police Introduces Radar Guns To Enforce Speed Limits, Aims For Safer Roads
The Mangaluru City Police have urged road users to follow speed limits set for various. On June 13, Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal announced that Mobile Speed Radar Guns will be used to penalisepeeding drivers. This initiative aligns with the Union Road Transport Ministry's April 6, 2018, standing order.
Commissioner Agrawal emphasised that adhering to these limits would support the police's "accident-free roads campaign." To enhance awareness, the City Police instructed relevant agencies to install caution boards indicating speed limits on specific road stretches.

A meeting was held with officials from these agencies, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) B.P. Dinesh Kumar and NHAI Mangaluru Project Director Abdulla Javed Zami.
Speed Limits for Different Vehicle Categories
The prescribed speed limits vary based on vehicle categories. For passenger vehicles with a capacity of nine passengers or less (M1 category), the limits are 100 kmph on 4-lane roads with dividers, including National and State Highways, and 70 kmph within Mangaluru City Corporation, City Municipal Councils, and Town Municipal Councils. All other roads have a limit of 70 kmph.

For passenger vehicles with more than nine seats (M2 and M3 categories), the speed limits are set at 90 kmph on highways, and 60 kmph within city limits and other roads. Goods vehicles and two-wheelers have a limit of 80 kmph on highways and 60 kmph within city limits and other roads. Autorickshaws have a uniform speed limit of 50 kmph across all road types.
Implementation Strategy
During the meeting, Commissioner Agrawal stated that speed guns would be deployed at strategic locations along roads and highways within the Commissionerate limits. This measure aims to catch drivers who exceed the prescribed speed limits. The installation of caution boards is crucial for informing drivers about the specific speed limits for each road segment.
Officials from various departments such as the Public Works Department, Mangaluru City Corporation, and Mangaluru Smart City Ltd., participated in the meeting. They discussed strategies for effective implementation of these measures to ensure road safety.
The enforcement of these speed limits is part of a broader effort to reduce accidents and improve road safety in Mangaluru. By ensuring that drivers are aware of and adhere to these limits, the police hope to create safer driving conditions for all road users.
This initiative reflects a collaborative approach between different agencies to address road safety issues comprehensively. The use of technology like Mobile Speed Radar Guns is expected to enhance enforcement efficiency and deter speeding violations effectively.
Overall, these measures aim to foster a safer driving environment in Mangaluru by promoting adherence to prescribed speed limits and raising awareness among road users.
