WAP-5 Train Engine: What You Should Know About Gatimaan's Engine
The Gatimaan Express has been making news of recent, being the fastest train in India. It was launched in April 2016 and travelled a distance of 188 kilometers, from Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station in Delhi to Agra in 100 minutes.
If one thinks that is impressive, real credits go to its engine, the WAP-5 electric locomotive engine. Here are some interesting facts about the WAP-5 engine.
The first 10 WAP-5 locomotive engines were imported from Swizerland in the year 1995. In the year 2000, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), based out of West Bengal started producing the engines in India.
As of March 2016, 95 WAP-5 engines were manufactured in India.
The WAP-5 locomotive engine can produce a maximum of 6,000 horsepower, but produces 5,450 horsepower continuously.
The WAP-5 engine operates at a speed of 160km/h. The engine achieved speeds of 184km/h during test runs and is capable of achieving a top speed of 225km/h.
Some of the safety systems available onboard the WAP-5 engine are vigilance control, slip/slide control, main overload relay, no volt relay, over voltage protection, and earth fault relay.
75 trains in India are traditionally hauled by the WAP-5 engine, which include the Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express, Aravali Express, and the Mumbai Rajdhani Express.
Although the WAP-5 engine is the fastest in India opertaing at 160km/h, it is just half the speed compared to high speed trains that operate in countries like Japan, France and China.
