Yamaha To Launch Leaning Multi Wheeler In 2014
Yamaha has confirmed that it will launch its first production Leaning Multi-Wheeler (LMW) in 2014. Yamaha's tilting vehicle will sport three wheels, similar to the Piaggio MP3 and unlike its own concept, the four wheeled Tesseract leaning motorcycle, which was revealed at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.
Yamaha has informed MSN Japan that the Leaning Multi-Wheeler will be revealed at this year's Tokyo Motor Show, which will be in November. It is also likely that the LMW will be showcased at the 2013 EICMA, that also falls around the same time. According to the MSN report, Yamaha will also reveal an ultra compact four wheeler at the motor show.
Piaggio MP3, seen in the image, is a three wheeled scooter that can lean into curves. But it is generally regarded as a flexible commuter motorcycle.
Yamaha's Leaning Multi-Wheeler on the other hand, will be sporty, being practical at the same time. The image released by Yamaha shows the LMW being tested wearing camouflage, but it clearly shows the motorcycle to be leaner and more compact than its Piaggio counterpart. The front wheels also appear to be thinner.
Sadly, it seems Yamaha will not produce the radical looking Tesseract Concept. The four wheeled leaning motorcycle was certainly a hit at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. However, the three wheeled LMW will certainly use the technology used by the Tesseract, such as the 'dual-scythe' suspension which allows the motorcycle to tilt.
According to Hiroyuki Yanagi, President and CEO, Yamaha Motor, informed MSN that the LMW will cost a million Yen ($10,000). Yamaha's LMW will serve a dual purpose, that of being a sporty and fast bike and a safe and comfortable commuter scooter. The three wheels makes it relatively more stable than a two wheeler, but provides similar mobility.
