Honda To Widen 500cc Parallel Twin Range

By Ajinkya

Honda is still to introduce their twin cylinder 500cc bikes in India. They had showcased their CBR500R at the 2014 Auto Expo, which was held in New Delhi. They currently offer three variants with the same 500cc parallel twin mill. On offer are the CBR500R, CB500F and the CB500X.

This was a new concept developed by the Japanese automobile manufacturer. They had decided to use a single engine that will be used across platforms and will share a great amount of parts between the models. Now there are rumors that the designers and engineers at Honda could be planning more models based on the same engine.

The Japanese manufacturer is planning to develop an off-road motorcycle. They are also working on a scooter that will resemble the NM4 Vultus. Honda has not confirmed any of these bikes but have asked their designers and engineers to figure a way to create more variations using the same 500cc parallel twin engine.

The challenge put in front of the designers and engineers at Honda is to utilise as much as they can without using any new or special parts. This is the only way they can lower costs of their vehicles and make a profit too. It will also be great for the customers as they can choose from a wider range of motorcycles.

Honda's 500cc twin cylinder engine is a 4-stroke machine which, actually is a 471cc fuel injected mill. It sports liquid cooling and will generate 42.9 horsepower along with 29.19 Nm of peak torque. The bike has a 6-speed gearbox with a cable-actuated, wet multi-plate clutch system.

Honda uses the same chassis for their three models: a diamond shaped steel tubed frame. It sports a twin-piston caliper in the front and a single piston caliper brake unit in the rear which is provided by Nissin. It will be great to see what Honda can create further, and importantly, how much longer it will take to get this bike to Indian shores?
