Royal Enfield EV (Flying Flea) To Debut Today - Here's What To Expect
Neo-retro motorcycle specialist Royal Enfield is set to reveal its first electric motorcycle today. The new electric motorcycle could bear the Flying Flea nameplate when it debuts in Milan ahead of the EICMA motorcycle show.
So what exactly is this all-new Royal Enfield EV; what name could it bear and when could it arrive on our shores? These are all questions that many fans of the Indian-owned British marque want to know. Well here are the details that Royal Enfield has teased till now and everything else that we know till now.
Royal Enfield EV - The "Flying Flea" Name
The Royal Enfield EV is set to bear the "Flying Flea" nameplate when it arrives on stage later today. The all-new Royal Enfield Flying Flea EV comes from the lightweight Flying Flea motorcycle used by British paratroopers in World War II.
The motorcycle which bore the official title - Royal Enfield WD/RE - was a 125cc single-cylinder motorcycle that weighed in at just 56 kilogrammes and was strapped into a frame. It was then parachuted off planes or sent to the ground on gliders to help soldiers carry messages between paratroopers and the forces on the frontline they had overtaken when radio communication was not possible.
Royal Enfield's teasers for the upcoming EV show the shadow of a bike on a parachute on buildings in Milan, which does suggest that the new EV could bear that nameplate. Royal Enfield has also patented the same name in India (through its parent company Eicher Motors) and in Europe as well.
Royal Enfield EV - Flying Flea To Feature Retro Design
The Royal Enfield EV is expected to continue with the tradition of the neo-retro that we've come to expect from the British marque. However, the new bike is expected to feature quite a few design elements that will be unique to it.
Patent images for the Royal Enfield Flying Flea EV show that the bike will feature girder forks up front, something seen on motorcycles from the 1920s. The battery pack will sit under a covered section around the frame above which sits a teardrop-shaped faux fuel tank element which we expect to play host to the charging point for the Royal Enfield EV.

Royal Enfield EV - Performance-Oriented Powertrain
The new Royal Enfield Flying Flea EV will be based on the firm's self-developed L-platform for EVs and reports over the years have suggested that the platform will feature a performance-oriented 96V electric architecture. The L platform is also expected to spawn more electric motorcycles in the future, details of which are still scarce.
The Royal Enfield Flying Flea is expected to be a lightweight (for an EV and for an Enfield) unit, though nothing quite as close to the German fighting motorcycle it was based on.

Thoughts About The Royal Enfield EV (Flying Flea)
The Royal Enfield Flying Flea will make its debut today in Milan, Italy and marks yet another time that the Indian-owned British marque is introducing a new motorcycle onto the international scene before its debut in India. The new Royal Enfield Flying Flea is expected to go into production sometime next year, details of which along with everything else about the bike will be revealed later tonight.
