Yamaha Prepares To Launch New Electric Scooter In India And Japan

Ola Electric currently leads the Indian electric two-wheeler market, with other manufacturers struggling to compete. In this context, Yamaha is reportedly developing a unique electric scooter for Japan and India. Here are the details that have emerged so far about this upcoming product.

Yamaha currently sells electric two-wheelers in only a few countries globally. India does not yet have a Yamaha electric two-wheeler on sale. However, recent developments suggest that it won't be long before Yamaha introduces an electric two-wheeler in India.

Yamaha s Electric Scooter for India Japan

The upcoming electric vehicle from Yamaha is expected to feature typical Yamaha styling with a focus on performance and premium features. Earlier reports suggested that Yamaha might introduce the Neo electric scooter in India. This model, equipped with a removable battery pack, is already available in markets like the UK.

However, fresh information indicates that Yamaha’s India-bound electric two-wheeler could be a completely new model not sold in any other market. There is no clarity on the exact launch date, and it could still be a couple of years before it hits Indian roads.

Yamaha is reportedly not in a hurry to launch its electric scooter. The company’s current focus remains on premium petrol-powered two-wheelers. It is believed that electric scooters will account for 20-30 per cent of the Indian two-wheeler market by 2030.

By 2030, Yamaha is expected to launch multiple electric vehicles. However, ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) powered vehicles are projected to continue dominating the market with a 70-80 per cent share. This is one reason why companies like Yamaha and Honda have shown limited interest in the electric two-wheeler space so far.

Despite this, manufacturers are preparing for the transition to an all-electric future. Yamaha is working on various projects to maintain its position in India, one of its most important markets. One such project is the revival of its iconic RX 100 motorcycle, expected to feature a modern 4-stroke engine instead of the old 2-stroke unit.

The Yamaha RX 100 is still fondly remembered by many Indians, and its launch will likely receive an overwhelming response. Electric two-wheelers have gained immense popularity in India, prompting global manufacturers to enter the market with their products.

Yamaha plans to introduce one or more electric two-wheelers in India. However, there is no clarity on when exactly it plans to launch its first electric vehicle in the country.

DriveSpark Thinks

Yamaha currently doesn't sell electric scooters in India and is prioritizing premium gas-powered models, they are developing a new electric two-wheeler specifically for the Indian market. This launch is likely still a few years out, as Yamaha anticipates electric scooters will only capture 20-30% of the market by 2030.
