Triumph 400 Lineup To Be Discontinued? New 350cc Platform Sparks Speculation

Triumph is developing a new 350cc platform to work around the latest GST tax slab. With this move, there were widespread speculations that the company might discontinue its existing 400cc lineup. However, it is unlikely to happen as the current 400cc motorcycles will continue to be sold alongside the upcoming 350cc models.

Triumph Developing a New 350cc Model

Bajaj, Triumph, and KTM are jointly developing a new sub-350cc platform derived from the existing 400cc powertrain. This development comes after the Indian government increased the GST tax to 40% for motorcycles with engines above 350cc, significantly impacting pricing in the segment.

Currently, these brands have a strong portfolio of 400cc motorcycles. Bajaj sells models like the Dominar 400 and Pulsar NS400Z, KTM offers the 390 Adventure, Duke, and RC 390, and Triumph's lineup includes the Speed 400, Scrambler 400X, Thruxton 400, and 400T.

The revised GST structure is expected to increase the prices of these motorcycles, making them less competitive in the market. Meanwhile, rivals such as Royal Enfield, Honda, Jawa, and Yezdi are benefiting from the tax advantage, as their popular models fall within the sub-350cc category and can be priced more aggressively.

To address this challenge, Bajaj, along with Triumph and KTM, started developing a new sub-350cc platform last year. The new models based on this platform are expected to arrive by April 2026. Following the announcement, speculation grew that the current 400cc lineup might eventually be phased out to make way for the upcoming sub-350cc motorcycles.

However, Bajaj, which manufactures these motorcycles at its Pune facility, will continue producing the 400cc models since they are also exported to several international markets. As a result, the existing 400cc motorcycles are likely to be sold alongside the new 350cc models, at least in the initial phase.

The long-term future of the 400cc motorcycles in India will likely depend on customer response once the new sub-350cc lineup enters the market. The 350cc segment remains India's most competitive and popular motorcycle category, where Royal Enfield continues to hold a dominant position. Models like the Classic 350, Hunter 350, and Bullet 350 consistently lead the charts.

Several manufacturers have attempted to challenge Royal Enfield's market share, but the brand's dominance in this segment is largely unshaken. It remains to be seen whether Triumph's new strategy can finally disrupt the established brand in India's most competitive 350cc motorcycle market.
